Being a Doula and the Fourth Trimester

Doula Lou is a mum of 2 children – she originally trained as a nanny and worked with children and families for 8 years.  Following the birth of her own children she stayed at home caring for them.  Once they had both gone to school she decided to re-train as a post-natal Doula.

We talked to Lou about:

  • A Doula’s role and responsibilities.
  • Lou’s training as a Doula and what’s involved.
  • The difference between a Maternity Nurse and a Doula.
  • The Fourth Trimester explained and Lou’s own experiences of this.
  • The developing brain – how babies look to us to help them solve how they feel and to meet their basic needs.
  • Looking after yourself in the early days and getting used to having a new little person completely reliant on you.
  • Some things to think about in those early days and the importance of finding your ‘tribe’.
  • A post-natal plan and what you can include.
  • Birth trauma and the three step rewind.
  • Lou’s top 3 tips for new parents.
